PET films (Polyethylene terephthalate)  PET is also known as polyester and from its use in PET bottles. It was developed in the USA in the early 1940s, initially as an alternative for silk in the production of synthetic fibres, and is now popular in textiles. In the early 1960s, people started to make polyester films, thereby opening up a whole new area of applications for this plastic. By the start of the 1970s, hollowware – especially bottles and containers - were being produced in blown form and thereby creating a third major use.
