AEO Certificate
Authorized Economic Operator with an AEO Certificate
An “Authorized Economic Operator” (AEO) is a company that holds an AEO certificate and is able to carry out customs procedures in a simplified manner. The extensive checks that would otherwise be required for each customs procedure are no longer necessary. Authorizations for “customs procedures with economic relevance” are granted more easily. The AEO certificate is valid throughout the entire European Union and simplifies customs processes in all EU member states. The certificate is issued by the responsible Main Customs Office (HZA), specifically by Department B, which is responsible for the collection of customs duties and excise taxes.
Requirements for obtaining an AEO certificate
Companies applying for an AEO certificate must provide extensive evidence of their reliability in both customs-related and accounting matters. For example, it is assessed whether compliance with customs regulations has been adequate in the past. Another requirement is an accounting system that allows appropriate control of transport and business documentation. The company’s financial solvency is also examined by the responsible Main Customs Office (HZA). For the issuance of AEO certificates S and F, compliance with security standards is additionally reviewed. Interested companies, as well as customers of certified businesses, can consult the “Guidelines for Authorized Economic Operators” to verify the approval requirements for obtaining an AEO certificate.
Advantages for companies holding an AEO certificate
For certificate holders, the main advantages of AEO certification lie in the standardized and accelerated handling of customs procedures. The certificate makes it possible to waive various forms of documentation and inspections required in individual customs processes. This standardized approach speeds up and simplifies procedures, creates lean internal structures within the company, and leads to cost savings.
The marketing effect should also not be underestimated, especially among customers who have experience with customs procedures. These companies understand the requirements a business must meet in order to obtain an AEO certificate. They value the reliability of such companies as well as the ability of certified businesses to process customs procedures more quickly. International customers will generally prefer an AEO-certified company over a provider without certification.
Advantages for customers of AEO-certified companies
Customers of AEO-certified companies can benefit from faster order processing due to the accelerated handling of customs procedures. In addition to saving time, customers also gain the assurance that certified companies possess the necessary expertise to carry out customs procedures correctly. Since companies with an AEO certificate undergo extensive review by the responsible Main Customs Office (HZA), the reliability and financial stability of certified businesses can be easily verified by customers. The fact that certifications are only granted when customs regulations have been consistently complied with in the past provides customers with confidence that the certified company has already gained sufficient experience in customs procedures. As a result, the risk of delivery delays due to customs-related issues is significantly reduced when working with AEO-certified companies.
Which AEO certificates are available?
In addition to the AEO-C certificate, which relates to customs simplifications, there is also the AEO-S certificate, which focuses on verifying a company’s compliance with security-related requirements. The AEO-F certificate combines both the C and S certificates. Bleher Folientechnik GmbH has been granted the AEO-C certificate. This demonstrates our experience in handling all relevant customs procedures within the European Union. Since the frequency of inspections for certificate holders is lower than for companies without certification, working with certified businesses offers a clear cost advantage. Our customs department can operate with leaner structures, saving costs for both us and our customers.
AEO certification for business outside the EU
The European Union is working to ensure that the AEO certificate is also recognized in agreements with third countries. This allows simplifications to be achieved even in trade with countries outside the European Union, helping to secure international supply chains. At Bleher Folientechnik GmbH, we have experience with customs procedures both within and outside the EU. By being granted the AEO certificate, we have taken an important step toward the international market and established ourselves as a reliable and trustworthy partner for customers worldwide.
