pick and place

Processing Films with Pick-and-Place Machines

In robotics, pick and place generally refers to the process of automatically picking up a workpiece or small part and placing it onto another workpiece.

In film processing, this usually involves picking viewing window films from a stack and precisely placing and bonding them where the window is needed in a package.

In order for pick-and-place machines to pick up and position the films, the films must meet certain requirements.

Pick-and-Place with Viewing Window Film from Bleher Folientechnik

Viewing window films marketed under the brand name optimont® by Bleher Folientechnik are made from biaxially oriented PET film. They offer outstanding transparency and have a surface with improved adhesion on one side. This makes them very well suited for back-lamination in pick-and-place processes.

The micro-rough special surface allows machines used for placing and bonding viewing windows into packaging to operate at high speeds. Thanks to the high robustness of the window film and its specialized surface, very high production speeds can be achieved.

This results in noticeable cost savings for manufacturers in the production of packaging with viewing windows.

The viewing window films in the Bleher product range can be printed using common printing methods.

Formats of Viewing Window Films

Depending on the machine used for the bonding process, the viewing window films must be supplied in the appropriate format. At Bleher Folientechnik, we have extensive experience with the requirements for our viewing window films.

We can supply them in special cut-to-size formats that precisely match the needs of your pick-and-place machine.

For machines with an integrated cutting system, we also supply viewing window films as short rolls, narrow rolls, as well as mother or master rolls.

Viewing Window Films Used in Food Packaging

In the food industry, additional regulations apply beyond the general requirements for viewing window films. A basic prerequisite is so-called food contact compliance.

The term food contact compliance means that the migration of material components from the packaging material into the food must be prevented. At the very least, only such minimal amounts may migrate that any health risk to consumers is excluded.

Of course, the properties of the food must not be affected in terms of taste, and no odor may transfer from the packaging to the food.

All optimont® viewing window films meet these requirements of the food industry.

Advantages of Packaging with Viewing Windows

Whether the viewing windows are bonded in using pick-and-place technology or by another method, viewing windows are always beneficial for customer confidence. Customers can immediately inspect the packaged product through the viewing window at any time. The fill level inside the packaging can also be checked easily.

This builds trust and provides a competitive advantage over competitors who offer their products without viewing windows.

Of course, the viewing window film must be selected to match the packaged goods. For example, at Bleher Folientechnik we also offer optimont® AF, a film with an anti-fog surface. This means that moisture released from packaged foods does not condense on the viewing window.

This allows even food products with a certain level of residual moisture to be packaged in viewing window packaging.

Differences Between Viewing Window Films for the Pick-and-Place Process

For reliable use in the pick-and-place process, it does not matter whether you choose the anti-fog coated film optimont® AF or optimont® 501, the film with the broadest range of applications. The 501 quality is also suitable for many industrial applications.

The optimont® UC viewing window film offers the highest transparency in the Bleher Folientechnik product range. It is therefore also approved for the archiving of documents.

Companies that focus on sustainability and environmental protection in their food packaging will choose optimont® 501-R-PET. In this material, at least 90 percent recycled content is used in production. This film enables companies to make an important contribution to environmental protection and sustainability.

Different thicknesses of the recycled film, ranging from 36 to 175 µm, allow its use in various application areas. For the other films, thicknesses from 8 to 250 µm are also available.
