BO-PET matte films
BO-PET matte films – indispensable in many areas of film processing
BO-PET matte films, or biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate films with a matte finish, are films equipped with a matte surface. This provides a glare-free appearance and a pleasant tactile feel. Products manufactured using matte films in printing processes are also visually influenced by the matte finish. Matte coatings not only affect the look and feel of the film but also its receptivity to further processing materials such as inks or laminates. As finished products, they combine the typical advantages of BO-PET films – strength, chemical stability, barrier properties, and dimensional stability – with aesthetic benefits and a non-reflective surface.
Properties of BO-PET matte films
BO-PET matte films combine the excellent mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties of BO-PET films with an aesthetically pleasing, non-glossy finish and a pleasant feel. Key characteristics include:
- Due to biaxial orientation and the base material polyethylene terephthalate, BO-PET matte films are extremely tear-resistant and highly resistant to mechanical stress
- They can withstand temperatures from -70°C to +150°C without losing shape or functionality
- The matte surface reduces reflections, which is particularly valued in optical applications where glare-free visibility is important
- They are resistant to many chemicals, solvents, oils, and greases
- They offer very good barrier properties against moisture, gases, and aromas, making them suitable for food packaging
- They are highly printable, suitable for lamination, and easy to cut, enabling use across a wide range of applications
BO-PET matte films in packaging
Premium packaging is often produced using BO-PET matte films. The subtle color effect and pleasant tactile feel convey a sense of quality and sophistication. Excellent printability and laminating capability enable visually demanding finishing processes. BO-PET matte films are used to package luxury products such as cosmetics, perfumes, watches, and jewelry, as well as high-end food products positioned in the premium segment.
BO-PET matte films in printing
In the printing sector, BO-PET matte films play an important role both as printed end products and in prepress processes. Their impact in packaging applications has already been described, but they are also widely used for decorative elements such as photo prints or adhesive films.
As transfer films in textile printing and other surface applications, BO-PET matte films transfer their pleasant feel and non-glossy appearance to the printed result. In textile printing especially, the matte finish and soft touch on garments are strong arguments in favor of transfer films made from BO-PET matte films.
BO-PET matte films as protective films for screens and displays
Protective films made from BO-PET matte films can be applied to smartphone displays, computer monitors, touchscreens, and televisions. They protect surfaces from scratches and other mechanical damage. When equipped with anti-static properties, they also reduce dust accumulation. The matte quality reduces glare and improves screen visibility.
BO-PET matte films as protective films for posters and signage
Posters and advertising boards displayed outdoors in frames or stands must be protected from moisture and UV radiation. BO-PET matte films, available in various formats, provide this protection. Their matte finish also reduces reflections that could otherwise impair readability. They are equally suitable for long-term indoor postings in offices or companies, protecting against dirt and disruptive glare.
BO-PET matte films as laminates for decorative applications
BO-PET matte films are ideal for laminating decorative objects to protect them from wear and contamination. Their matte appearance and pleasant feel enhance the overall perception of decorative elements, conveying a refined and high-quality impression.
BO-PET matte films in furniture and interior design
Similar to decorative elements, furniture and everyday objects benefit from coatings made with BO-PET matte films. In addition to protecting surfaces from scratches, dirt, and dust, such coatings improve appearance and tactile qualities. In furniture production, matte BO-PET films can enhance the look of cost-effective materials such as plywood or particle board. Cold metal surfaces or low-cost plastic surfaces can also be upgraded visually and tactually. In interior design, the wide range of colors and surface textures available offers extensive creative possibilities.
Environmental aspects and recycling
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in all application areas. Although polyethylene terephthalate is based on fossil resources, it benefits from a well-established PET recycling infrastructure. The matte surface itself does not pose a problem in recycling, and BO-PET matte films can be processed within existing PET recycling systems. However, composite materials created through lamination or coating cannot be easily recycled. Research into bio-based PET raw materials aims to reduce the ecological footprint of BO-PET matte films in the future.
Durability – advantage and challenge
The long service life of BO-PET matte films is advantageous for many applications but poses environmental challenges, as PET is not biodegradable. Improved circular economy strategies and enhanced collection, sorting, and processing of plastic waste will be essential to reduce environmental impact.
Differentiated surface properties
Modern manufacturing processes allow precise control of surface characteristics, ranging from lightly satin finishes to rough textures or strongly diffused light-scattering surfaces. This enables BO-PET matte films to be tailored to specific industrial, advertising, or design requirements. Variations in roughness, haze levels, and tactile feel open up broad design possibilities.
Special versions
In addition to aesthetic optimization, BO-PET matte films can be enhanced with functional features such as anti-static properties, scratch-resistant coatings, UV stabilizers, or antibacterial surfaces. These functional films expand applications into areas such as healthcare, electronics manufacturing, logistics, and public information systems, where hygiene, durability, and readability under difficult lighting conditions are essential.
Reliable processing
BO-PET matte films offer high process reliability. Their uniform behavior ensures clean processing during die-cutting, laminating, or hot stamping. In automated production environments, consistent product quality reduces waste. Even thin film grades provide excellent flatness for precise processing.
Brand communication
In competitive markets, tactile and visual differentiation plays an increasingly important role. BO-PET matte films create distinctive visual and tactile effects. Matte surfaces convey restraint while simultaneously communicating quality and modern design. Combined with embossing, gloss effects, or spot varnish, they provide extensive creative opportunities for premium product positioning.
Technological development
Ongoing functional and aesthetic differentiation continues to open new application fields for BO-PET matte films. Functional specialization combined with emotionally appealing design possibilities strengthens their market potential. Continuous technological development enables optimization of traditional applications and expansion into new areas.
